I created each wine program with beginners and experts in mind. In each lesson we look at the ways climate, elevation, soils, viticulture, vinification, and personality affect the taste and ageability of table, sparkling, and sweet wines. By the end of your course you will be speaking and writing fluently about Wine and the boutique volcanic terroir that has everyone talking about Sicily.

Our students arrive from almost every corner of the globe. They are young and old, beginners, wine enthusiasts, and trade professionals. They come to Etna Wine School to start a career, complete their education, and keep up to date on the most dynamic wine region in Europe. Whatever your level of wine knowledge and wherever you are, our local and online courses offer flexible ways to learn about one of the great comforts of the world — Wine.

Etna Wine School courses are different from other online wine programs in a couple of ways.

First, where most wine programs online are dedicated to business of wine, our programs include a broad study of Wine while focusing on the peculiarities of making wine on a volcano in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.

Second, you are not required to test on our schedule. We give everyone ample time to complete the program(s) of choice and complete the assessments on their own schedule.*

*Our Ambassador and Scholar programs are certificate programs that establish  timelines.

Our programs deal with the promotion and responsible consumption of an alcoholic beverage. Therefore, proof of age is required during registration. We do not supply wine for the wine tasting elements. Students are responsible for tasting wines included in the course.

CHILDREN

Starting September 1, 2022, we will discontinue accepting new reservations for groups with children under the age of 13 years. While we understand families would like to share cultural experiences with their family members, we believe our professional wine courses are not suitable for young people who do not yet share an interest in wine, or the ability to taste the wines we discuss.

Since 2012, our courses have been in the countryside and wineries on Mount Etna. Today, thanks to video, we are able to bring you there, to meet the producers, and see the vineyards and barrels rooms. We supply a list of course wines to buy from the wineries and local retailers.

We offer a la carte courses and complete programs, which you can review in our Course Catalogue. Some of our short courses are found within the complete courses. Where applicable, we have labeled each course as beginner, intermediate, and advanced. If you ever have any questions, you can contact us using our online form or by sending an email to info@etnawineschool.com

All of Etna Wine School’s courses (in campo and online) are taught in English. The Italian words and phrases we use are included in the glossary of your text book for the course, The New Wines of Mount Etna. Where translations, captions or other notations are possible are available (videos, slides, etc), we include them.

We encourage you to focus on a single (1) course at a time. If you would like to dive into Etna, our Ambassador program is perfect for you. For students who want to go all the way, we offer the Etna Scholar program.

Students should expect to engage each lesson fully, using the time available to read, watch videos, and take exams. Studying for one hour every day will keep you moving forward faster and better than one hour per week, for example.

Our goal is to give you all the tools to pass and even excel through each module, lesson, and course. All exams are pass / fail, and results are instructive. It is possible to fail an exam. Exams can be taken more than one time.

We offer fast and easy registration on our ALL COURSES page; the link can be found at the top of the page. Follow the directions to select the course(s) you want. Complete your personal or business and billing details. All courses are billed in €Euros. Once your registration is confirmed, you will receive an email from us with additional instructions for signing on to our educational platform with your unique student identification information.

We are flexible on this matter. When credit card payments are not possible, we offer other methods for payment, including PayPal, Transferwise, and bank/wire transfer. If these don’t work for you, let us know.

This can happen. Check your SPAM filter first on your email account. If you don’t see the confirmation email, contact us using the online form, or send an email to info@etnawineschool.com with your Full Name, Email Address, and a detailed message. Also, check with your bank to confirm that the payment did or did not go through. If the payment did go through, please send us a copy of your payment.

Our courses are available year-round, 24 hours a day. You decide when to start, when to study, and when to test your knowledge of Etna wines, grape varieties, geology, and history. When we have scheduled webinars or online events we will let you know by email.

We do not currently offer financial assistance for our courses. In the past, some of our students (sommeliers, retailers, journalists) have shared the cost of the program with their employer.

We make it easy to give our courses and programs to friends, relatives and colleagues as a gift. Ask about our voucher program by email: info@etnawineschool.com

Each course is different. The amount of time it takes you to complete a course is directly proportionate to the amount of time you are able to dedicate to your studies and each exam. All courses are designed to be completed within a few weeks. Students seeking the Etna Ambassador Certificate are required to finish the course in six (6) months from the registration date, to receive the credential and documentation.

For detailed information about the organization of the program, or an individual course, check out our All Courses page in the main menu.

Because this is an online course, you will need a computer (preferred), a tablet or smartphone, a connection to the internet, a web-browser, an email address (for communication, course materials, and personal identification). Proficiency with the English language and a desire to learn about Wine are not required, but they are helpful.

There is only one textbook for this course, The New Wines of Mount Etna, An Insider’s Guide to The History and Rebirth of a Wine Region, written by your instructor, Benjamin North Spencer DipWSET. The textbook is available in Kindle/ePub and Paperback via Amazon.com. Each module, lesson and part of the course is based on this book, other supporting reading materials (articles, interviews, books), and video interviews.

First of all, congratulations! This is no small feat. The knowledge you have received has taken generations to assemble. Once your courses are finalized and every element of your program is complete, we will send you documentation and an Etna Wine School certificate commensurate with the course(s) you have completed. Graduates of our Etna Ambassador program will be invited to take part in the Etna Scholar track, which is the highest achievement that we offer.

Request to audit one of our wine courses should be submitted in writing. To send us a request, you can use our online contact form or send us an email at info@etnawineschool.com

We are not affiliated with other programs or education centers. Our courses can be particularly supportive for wine students, and especially those who are studying Italian wines, for a sommelier certification, wine retail, or a job in journalism. Understanding wine, new trends in the trade, and being able to speak and write about it fluently offers endless professional potential. Our former students often use our certificate to augment their resumes when applying for work or securing new clients.
