ABOUT THE WINERY
Santa Maria La Nave began researching the ancient vines on Mount Etna in 2000. Four years later, a vineyard of grafted and un-grafted Grecanico Dorato and Albanello were planted in Contrada Nave, at 1,100 meters above sea level, on the volcano’s northwest slope.
A second vineyard of pre-phylloxera and old-vine Nerello on Monte Ilice followed. The vines follow the steep and sandy slopes of the 1,000 year old pyroclastic cone at about 800 meters above the Ionian Sea, on the mountain’s southeast flank.
Today, the boutique family winery continues their research into Etna’s lost varieties while producing small quantities of still and sparkling wines from organic dry-farmed vineyards.
